Camera Geek

A slang term used to describe a person who is especially interested in the technical and equipment aspects of photography.

Chimping

A slang term that describes one or more people viewing images on a camera's LCD screen. Usually involves pointing and making approving sounds like "ooh".

Coated Lens

A lens with a thin layer of transparent material that reduced the amount of light reflected off the surface of the lens. A coated lens is faster than an uncoated lens because it transmits more light.

Color Balance

How color is recorded and reproduced. Color balance is referred to as the temperature of light and is measured in degrees Kelvin.

Composition

The arrangement of the elements in a scene.

Contrast

The range of difference between the light and dark areas of an image. Also referred to as density or tonal range.

Contrasty

A higher than normal contrast. The range of density is greater than the original scene.

Crap

A derogatory slang term that describes anything that is deemed unsatisfactory or undesirable.

Cropping

Printing only part of an image that is in the photograph, usually for a more pleasing composition.
