Saturation

The percieved intensity of color. Saturated colors are described as bright, vivid or strong. Desaturated colors are described as dull, flat or washed out.

Scrim

A panel of translucent material used to diffuse light.

Seamless

A slang term for a roll of material used for a background. Usually made of paper.

Selective Focus

Choosing a large aperture to produce a shallow depth of field. Usually used to isolate a subject in the scene by causing the background and/or the foreground to appear blurry.

Short Lens

A slang term for a wide angle, or lens with a short focal length.

Shutter

A mechanical device inside the camera that controls the amount of time light reaches the film or sensor.

Shutter Priority

An exposure mode on an automatic amera that allows you to set the desired aperture, and the camera will automatically set the shutter speed for a proper exposure. Also know as TV (time value) mode.

Side Lighting

Light striking the subject from the side relative to the camera position. Side lighting causes definition of texture and modeling.

Single Lens Reflex (SLR or DSLR) Camera

A camera in which you view the scene through the same lens that takes the picture. Usually, single lens reflex cameras have interchangeable lenses.

DSLR refers to a digital SLR camera.

Snoot

A tube shaped device used to direct light into a narrow beam.

Soft Box

A device, usually constructed of fabric in which light passes through one or more layers of translucent material to diffuse the light.

Soft Lighting

Lighting that is low to moderate  in contrast and diffused such as the light on a cloudy day.

Stop Down

Changing the aperture to a smaller opening, for examle from f8 to f11.
