All

Ambient Light

The light already existing either indoors or outdoors that is not caused by any illumination supplied by the photographer.

Angle of View

The area of a scene the the lens covers or can see. A wide angle (short focal length) lens has a greater angle of view than a telephoto Long focal length) lens.

Aperture

The opening in the lens through which light passes. The aperture opening can be adjustable or fixed. The Aperture is usually described in f-stops where the smaller the f-stop number, the larger the aperture opening.

Aperture Priority (AV Mode)

An exposure mode on automatic cameras that lets you set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed for a correct exposure.

Auto Focus (AF)

A system by which the camera lens automatically focuses the image of a selected part of the scene.

Automatic Camera

A camera with a built in exposure meter that automatically sets the aperture, shutter speed ISO or all three for a correct exposure.

Background

The part of the scene that appears behind the main subject of the photograph

Backlighting

Light coming from behind the subject toward the camera lens. Backlighting typically produces a silhouette effect.

Balance

I composition, the placement of colors, light masses or objects in a scene to create harmony and equilibrium

Barn Doors

Two or more opaque surfaces attached to a light to control the direction of light.

Bokeh

Bokeh is an adaptation of a Japaneese word meaning blur. In photography it is used to describe the quality of the areas of the photograph which are not in focus. 

Bounce Lighting

Light, usually flash reflected off a ceiling or other reflective surface to diffuse the light.

Bowl

Slang term for a Parabolic Reflector.

Bracketing

Taking additional images through a range of exposures, both lighter and darker when unsure of the correct exposure

Bulb (B) Setting

A shutter speed setting that allows for a long exposure. When using the bulb setting, the shutter will stay open as long as the shutter button is depressed.

Camera Geek

A slang term used to describe a person who is especially interested in the technical and equipment aspects of photography.

Chimping

A slang term that describes one or more people viewing images on a camera's LCD screen. Usually involves pointing and making approving sounds like "ooh".

Coated Lens

A lens with a thin layer of transparent material that reduced the amount of light reflected off the surface of the lens. A coated lens is faster than an uncoated lens because it transmits more light.

Color Balance

How color is recorded and reproduced. Color balance is referred to as the temperature of light and is measured in degrees Kelvin.
